The Challenge

Indian farmers lose 25-40% of their produce revenue to middlemen and inefficient supply chains. Amit Deshpande, a former agri-commodity trader, and Neha Kulkarni, a full-stack developer, wanted to build a direct farm-to-buyer marketplace.

The core challenge was creating a platform that worked for users with low digital literacy โ€” farmers in tier-3 and tier-4 towns who primarily communicate in Hindi and Marathi. They needed voice-enabled interfaces, WhatsApp-based order notifications, and a logistics tracking system that didn't require constant internet connectivity.

Additionally, the platform needed APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) compliance, FSSAI licensing for processed goods, and integration with government MSP (Minimum Support Price) data to ensure price transparency.

The BSL Solution

Through the BSL (Bharat Startup Launchpad) Growth Edition, KisanConnect built a farmer-first technology stack:

UI/UX Design: Multilingual interfaces in Hindi, Marathi, and English with voice-search for crop discovery. Large tap targets and simplified navigation for first-time smartphone users.

Mobile App: A lightweight Android app (<15MB) optimized for low-end devices and 2G/3G networks. Offline-capable order management with background sync.

WhatsApp Integration: Automated order confirmations, price alerts, and delivery tracking via WhatsApp Business API โ€” the platform farmers already trusted.

Compliance Stack: FSSAI licensing, APMC mandi integration, GST compliance for inter-state trade, and DPIIT Startup India recognition for government scheme eligibility.

Cloud Credits: Utilized BSL (Bharat Startup Launchpad)'s AWS Activate credits (โ‚น8.5L) for the entire first year of hosting, cutting their burn rate to near-zero on infrastructure.

The Results

KisanConnect now serves 2,400+ farmers across 3 districts in Maharashtra, facilitating direct sales of produce worth โ‚น4.2 Crore in its first year. Farmers report an average 22% increase in take-home revenue by cutting out middlemen.

โ€œBSL (Bharat Startup Launchpad)'s directory of government schemes alone was worth the membership. We discovered 3 agritech grants we didn't know existed and secured โ‚น8L in funding. Combined with the AWS credits, our total infra cost for Year 1 was literally zero rupees. Thanks to BSL (Bharat Startup Launchpad) for doing everything!โ€
